The University Transfer Program (UTP)

The University Transfer Program (UTP), operating successfully in several countries around the world, enables students to complete part of the course work necessary for an American degree outside the USA. At the heart of the program is the concept that all students should complete during their first two years of study a number of general and introductory-level subjects before specializing in any field. These subjects are common to almost all universities and almost all fields of specialization.

Students can complete some or all of these subjects at the American College and then transfer to a university in the USA to obtain the B.A. or B.Sc. degree. Students usually spend two years or less in Sri Lanka and earn 30-60 credits (30 credits per academic year, 15 per academic semester) from the following areas of study:


1. English composition
Composition I, Composition II, Technical writing

2. Humanities
Literature, Art, Music, Philosophy, Religion, Communications, etc.

3. Social sciences
History, Political science, Sociology, Psychology, Economics, Anthropology, Geography, etc.

4. Sciences
Physical science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Zoology, etc.

5. Mathematics
College algebra, Statistics, Trigonometry, Calculus, etc.

6. Business studies
Business, Personal finance, Accounting, Business law, etc.

7. Languages
Beginning French I, French II, Beginning Spanish I, Spanish II

8. Speech
Public Speaking

9. Computer studies
Microcomputer applications, Programming, Networking, Graphics
